Computed from Open-Meteo's historical archive (ERA5) for the grid point nearest central Chengdu, 10 full years of daily values. Figures are averages, not records — an individual year can sit several degrees either side.

How to read this grid

Chengdu sits in the Sichuan Basin, which is why its climate behaves differently from most of China at the same latitude: cloud cover is high all year, winters are mild and damp rather than cold and bright, and summer heat arrives with humidity that makes 30°C feel considerably worse.

The grid above averages every day from 2015 to 2024, so a single freak month will not distort it. Each cell gives the month's average daily high and low in °C, then total rainfall and the number of days with at least 1mm of rain. The month you are in is shaded, in Chengdu time.

The four seasons, honestly

Summer is the season to plan around rather than ignore. July is the wettest month of the year at roughly 279mm, and the heat peaks at the same time: August averages 31.1°C by day. If you are here in July or August, build the day around early mornings and air-conditioned afternoons, and treat rain as a scheduling fact rather than bad luck.

Spring (March to May) is the most comfortable stretch: 23.8°C in April and 27.2°C in May, with the rainy season not yet at full strength. Autumn behaves similarly from September into October, and is the other window most visitors should aim for.

Winter is mild by Chinese standards but grey and damp — January averages 10.7°C by day and 3.6°C at night, with little snow in the city itself. Bring a warm layer for unheated teahouses and courtyards, not an arctic coat.

What the climate actually asks you to pack

  • 01

    A compact umbrella, all year

Rain is spread across every month. The summer totals are far higher, but a week in Chengdu with no rain at all is the exception rather than the rule.

  • 02

    Breathable layers, not heavy coats

Even in the coolest month the daytime average stays above freezing. The discomfort here is humidity and indoor cold, not deep frost.

  • 03

Shoes you can walk wet streets in

Old lanes, parks and the panda base are all walking surfaces. Summer downpours leave standing water in the alleys for hours.

Questions people actually ask

What is the best month to visit Chengdu?

April, May, September and October are the most comfortable: daytime highs between roughly 23.8°C and 27.2°C, with less rain than midsummer.

Does it rain a lot in Chengdu?

Yes, but unevenly. July and August each bring around 279mm, while December and January are closer to 15mm. The city is overcast most of the year regardless.

Does Chengdu get snow?

Rarely in the city centre. Winter days average around 11°C in December and January, and any snow is usually brief and on the surrounding hills.

Is Chengdu humid?

Yes. It is a humid subtropical basin, so summer heat feels heavier than the thermometer suggests, and winter cold feels damper than the temperature implies.

What time zone is Chengdu in?

China Standard Time, UTC+8, with no daylight saving. The clock in this site's header always shows Chengdu time, whatever your own time zone is.
