Jiuzhaigou: the valley that is not a day trip

Turquoise lakes over travertine terraces, in a valley a long way north. The new railway cut the journey to under two hours plus a coach — but the park still needs a full day of its own.

What Jiuzhaigou is

A Y-shaped valley of lakes and waterfalls formed by travertine dams: calcium carbonate precipitating out of the water, building terraces that hold the lakes in place and give them their colour. The palette is real — dissolved minerals and algae do the work — and it is why the place is a UNESCO site and why every photograph of it looks over-saturated.

The park is a bus-and-walk operation. Shuttle buses run up the two branches of the Y; you get off, walk the boardwalks between stops, and get back on. Nobody walks the whole valley, and the bus ticket is not optional in any practical sense.

Getting there now that the railway exists

  1. 1

    Rail to Huanglongjiu station

Chengdu East to Huanglongjiu takes as little as 1 hour 39 minutes on the Chengdu–Xining line. The station sits at 2,977 metres — it is cold, and altitude is real even here.

  2. 2

    Coach from the station

The station is 93km from the Jiuzhaigou gate, about two hours by road. Shuttle coaches cost CNY 28–56 and run from roughly 06:00 to 23:00, timed to the trains; buy at the station or in the shuttle mini-program.

  3. 3

    Or fly to Jiuhuang airport

Jiuhuang airport is 88km and about 90 minutes from the park gate. Flying saves a day of travel but adds weather risk: this airport cancels for wind and low cloud more than most.

  4. 4

Do not take the bus from Chengdu

440km and 9–10 hours by road. It is a fine journey if you want to see the terrain, and a bad way to spend a day of a short trip now that the train exists.

The two-night shape

Night one: travel to the park gate area. Enter the park at opening on day two, ride to the far end of one branch, and walk down through the lakes rather than up. Leave when the buses stop, eat at the gate, sleep again.

Day three is the second branch in the morning and the coach back to the station in the afternoon. Trying to compress this into one day means arriving after 14:00, when entry closes, or seeing one branch of a valley that has two.

Autumn is the peak and the crowds match it. Winter is cheap, half-empty and partly frozen — some lakes are more beautiful with ice, some paths close.

Questions people actually ask

How much are Jiuzhaigou tickets?

CNY 190 plus CNY 90 for the park bus in peak season, or CNY 80 plus CNY 80 in low season. Admission is real-name and date-specific with a daily cap.
