Taikoo Li: grey tiles, luxury shops, one old temple

An open-air retail block built in the shape of a Sichuan courtyard town, with Daci Temple still working in the middle of it. No ticket, no roof, and the best-designed half hour in central Chengdu.

Why this is not just another mall

Taikoo Li is a shopping complex that behaves like a neighbourhood. Instead of a sealed atrium, the developer laid out two- and three-storey buildings in the idiom of a historic Sichuan town — grey tiled pitched roofs, timber frames, narrow lanes — and let the brands move in underneath. Luxury storefronts sit directly below eaves that look centuries older than the handbags.

The trick that makes it more than pastiche is what stayed: Daci Temple, a working Buddhist temple, occupies the centre of the block. You walk from a Gucci window to a courtyard with incense burning in about forty seconds, and both feel like they belong there.

The four things worth doing

  • 01

Walk the West Plaza at dusk

The shallow reflecting pool mirrors the tiled roofs and the lit shopfronts. On an overcast day — most days in Chengdu — it photographs better than in full sun.

  • 02

    Step into Daci Temple

Incense, older visitors, a courtyard that ignores the retail around it. Keep your voice down and do not photograph monks without asking.

  • 03

Look at the rooflines, not the windows

The design borrows the depth and overhang of local courtyard architecture. The join between traditional eaves and glass display windows is the reason this block is studied by other cities.

  • 04

Eat on the edges, not in the middle

The central units are international chains. The lanes on the north and east sides have better local options at lower prices.

Taikoo Li or Chunxi Road?

Both, in this order: Chunxi Road for the panda photograph and the metro, then Taikoo Li to actually spend time. Chunxi Road is retail logic in a straight line; Taikoo Li is a place designed to be walked around without a destination.

If you have one hour in downtown Chengdu and no interest in shopping, skip both and go to People's Park instead. If you have two hours and it is raining, Taikoo Li wins — it is covered at the edges and the temple courtyard is worth getting wet for.

Questions people actually ask

Is Taikoo Li free to visit?

Yes. It is an open-air public complex with no entry fee. You only pay if you shop or eat.

What is the metro station for Taikoo Li Chengdu?

Chunxi Road station on Lines 2 and 3. From Exit A or D it is a three to five minute walk south through the pedestrian district.

Is the temple inside Taikoo Li real?

Yes — Daci Temple is a functioning Buddhist temple that predates the development and was kept in place when the block was built around it.

How long do you need at Taikoo Li?

Forty-five minutes to an hour and a half. It is compact, and the point is the walk rather than any single stop.
